Gorton Community Center

Why Your Gift is Important

Gorton Community Center is an independent, not-for-profit "community house" established in Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1972. Gorton is not publicly funded. Its operations and improvements are funded entirely by fees for the services provided and by the gifts of generous donors. Our mission "To Be the Heart of the Community" is accomplished with minimal staff and on a very lean budget. We are not a department of the Lake Forest government. We receive no subsidies from taxpayers, nor do we receive United Way operating support.

With your help, Gorton Community Center sustains and enhances:

  • The only Center for Nonprofit Organizations in the region, offering offices and event venues for over 100 other social-service and cultural nonprofits at below-market rates, enabling these groups to serve over 100,000 constituents.
  • The only local Performing Arts Center.
  • The only local privately-funded Fine Arts Center.
  • The only local nonprofit, part-time child care/preschool facility for children six weeks through age five, Gorton Children's Drop-In Center.
Gorton also offers over 250 classes, programs, and performing arts events annually and provides an exceptional historic facility for meetings and special events. Over 180,000 people walk through our doors each year, coming from 99 different zip codes.

Your charitable gift helps close the gap between the cost of operations and our affordable fees for quality programs, attractive public rooms, and charitable offices, studios, and performance venues. Voluntary, tax-deductible gifts ensure the future of these services. Each $1 of donations underwrites $3 of programming and support for each Gorton user.

Your gift to Gorton makes a difference every day for people of all ages, interests, backgrounds, and needs, in a setting fostering learning and caring that truly is "The Heart of the Community." Your tax-deductible gift to support Gorton's mission will be greatly appreciated.

We participate on GuideStar, the on-line standard for nonprofit accountability. Please click the link below to take a look at our listing.
